 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lenakinta'nija'peres," 16th, 1971 - March 31st 1995) is also known as Selena is an American Tejano performer. Her contribution to fashion and music gave Selena the title of "Queen" of Tejano music. Selena is among the most prominent performers from the Mexican-American genre of the late 20th century. Billboard magazine placed her at third place in 2020 in their "Greatest Latino Artists List of All Time", which was inspired by Latin music and Latin albums. Her style of dress earned her the name "Tejano Madonna". Her fashion choices are what brought her the nickname "Tejano Madonna" from media outlets. Quintanilla, Suzette Quintanilla. The singer was frequently criticized during the 1980s and she was refused performances at Texas venues due to her performances of Tejano music, a predominantly male-dominated genre. Her popularity grew when she won the Tejano Music Award as Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987. It was awarded nine times. In 1989 she signed with EMI Latin and released her debut album entitled Entre a Mi Mundo (1992). Her brother was her chief music producer and the songwriter. Entre a Mi Mundo made it to the top spot on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums charts for eight consecutive months. It was praised by critics of music as the "breakthrough" album of her musical career. "Como la Flor" was one of the album's singles, became her most loved hero song. Live! (1993) was nominated as the best Mexican/American album at 1994 Grammy Awards. It was the first Tejano recording to win this award. Amor Prohibido was her 1994 album. It became one of the most popular Latin albums. It was widely praised as being responsible for Tejano music's first commercially viable era since it was one of the most sought-after Latin music subgenres at the time.
